1899 Clever English Sterling Silver Desk Box w/Writing Slate Lid & Pencil
Presented is a wonderful English sterling silver desk box with pencil. This piece dates to 1899 and was made by Wright & Davies. The box is done in an interesting sloped design, with the lid opening at the higher end and folding out to rest on the desk below. Once open, the reason for this becomes clear, the glass or ceramic material in the lid has a slightly rough surface on the interior, for writing erasable notes in pencil. The lid has a little silver mechanical pencil, which slips into a loop on the side. The exterior of the lid makes a decoratively edged frame for the white glass or ceramic, which on that side is smooth. The box itself has three compartments that slope upward from the tall side, for holding stamps. The frame holding the glass or ceramic material does detach from the inside of the lid, so a photo could be set to show on the exterior, or a calendar or scratch pad set in the interior, etc. The design is very clever and useful, and this piece would make a great addition to any desk or study.
The box is in great condition. The hinge is in good shape, and the lid closes smoothly and evenly. The glass has some minor chipping around the edge, but nothing that is visible without taking the lid apart. The pencil is a little worn, but the mechanism for extending the lead still seems to work nicely. The silver has some minor dings around the base, but nothing significant. There are no splits, no dents, no monograms, no monogram removals, and no repairs.
This piece is hallmarked on the side with the lion passant for sterling silver, the leopard's head for the city of London, the date letter d for 1899, and the maker's mark for Wright & Davies. The frame holding the glass, on the inside of the lid, is also hallmarked with the lion passant for sterling silver, the leopard's head for the city of London, and the maker's mark for Wright & Davies. The side lip of the lid is hallmarked with the lion passant for sterling silver,  the date letter d for 1899 and the maker's mark for Wright & Davies. There are two little hallmarks near the edge of the top of the lid which are possibly French import hallmarks, though they are a bit too worn to be sure.
The box measures about 4 3/4 by 3 3/4 by 2 inches, LxWxH. The pencil is about 3 inches long.
The total weight for the piece is 323 grams. This includes the weight of the wood lining the compartment and the glass in the lid, but the majority of the weight is sterling silver.
