A signed and dated (1801) French graphite drawing of the lovers Venus
and Mars . The image measures 19” x 14” and depicts
Venus and Mars in their conjugal bed. The shield and weapons of Mars lie on the
floor beside a pair of doves. As visible
in the photos, the rear of the piece shows some staining and loss to the lower
margin. The piece is dated 1801 and signed, though I am unable to make out the signature. There is a fold down the center. Someone has applied some tape to the center and to the peripheries at some point. See photo of reverse. Still a very appealing piece with lots of
character. Please ask if questions.
