This is an antique etching of a Native American chief with horses in the background.
It is pencil signed by Henry Ziegler.
I believe this dates from the 1920s or 1930s. It is in its original frame.
The frame it is in measures 13 1/2 inches high x 15 1/4 inches wide (34.3 cm x 38.7 cm). The overall mat measures 12 3/4 inches high x 14 1/2 inches wide (32.4 cm x 36.8 cm). The etching itself measures 8 5/8 inches high x 10 7/8 inches wide (21.9 cm x 27.6 cm). The viewable part of the etching inside the mat measures 8 1/4 inches high x 10 1/2 inches wide (20.9 cm x 26.6 cm).
Henry Ziegler (1899–1968) was best known for his western etchings, illustrations and paintings. He was born in Sherman, Texas.
In this etching, there is a Native American Indian Chief holding a bow and arrow, lying in wait behind rocks. He seems to be watching what is going on with the horses. I’m not sure what his goal is here though, or if this involves Cowboys.
The etching is attached to a piece of paper along the top, which was then attached to the mat, along the top. I have taken a photo to show this.
When I purchased this, the glass underneath had quite a bit of black spotting, though I’m not sure if that is mold caused by water or caused by foxing. I cleaned the glass. The mat on this piece has quite a bit of this left. There is also some along the bottom of the etching in the off white area. There’s probably some on the etching, but you can’t see it. There is also a dark green oval mark in the upper left corner. I don’t know what caused this though.
The frame has scattered nicks and scuff marks.
I reattached the artwork with framing staples.
It weighs 2 lbs. 8 oz. (1.128 kg).
