French School 1870: The Ballerina and her Adoring Protector, Excellent Satirical Sketch, Grévin A poignant vignette of Paris life on the boulevards, circa 1870, in colored pencil with white gouache highlights. The elderly gentleman falls at the feet of the pretty young ballerina, crying out (from the faint pencil caption at bottom) "Oh, how fine you are in that role!" And the girl accepts the homage, but appears somewhat distant and unmoved. He's in love, but she is not... Alfred Grévin (28 January 1827 – 5 May 1892), who most likely created this sketch, probably for publication in a Parisian satirical weekly, was best known during his lifetime for his caricature studies of contemporary Parisian women. (He was also a sculptor, cartoonist, and designed costumes and sets for popular theater.) This sheet is a particularly good creation, and it brings a melancholy smile to my face as I write this listing. Dimensions are about 9 inches by 7.75 inches, mounted on light cardboard. There is a pencilled attribution to Grévin, lower right, and I for one accept that attribution. Condition is quite good. An affecting nineteenth century work, from an important creator, and modestly priced. Shipping will be $9 within the U.S. And to see what else I have for sale, please click
