Derriere Le Miroir, No 71-72, 1954 Publisher: Aime Maecht "Theogony by Hesiod" 15" x 11" Overview: This is an extraordinary Vintage Original Cubist lithograph by Georges Braque (1882-1963) printed in Derriere Le Miroir in 1954. This illustration was originally intended to be part of the Vollard Suite. Vollard approached Braque to create some etchings and Braque immediately chose to illustrate Hessiod’s Theogony which he had recently read and very much admired. At this period Braque was obsessed with the art and literature of the very early Geometric and Protoattic periods (Circa 900 - 600 BC). Braque's interest in the project is evident by the large number of preparatory drawings he made. The printing was to be made by Galanis who took a long time to complete the work and when Vollard died tragically in 1939 the printing of the edition had not been completed. In 1954 Aime Maeght decided to republish the works in book form and it was assumed that all the plates had been cut down by Galanis. This vintage original lithograph is in very good condition and would look absolutely incredible framed. I have six lithographs from this series that I will be listing for sale.
