John E.Costigan-Mother And Child,Original Etching c.1930 Pencil Signed and titled Costigan was born in 1888 in Providence.Largely self taught except for a brief time with William Merritt Chase he became a full member of the National Academy of Design, the most coveted honor of its time. This charming but complex etching was produced during the Great Depression It clearly captures the sweet love of every mother for her child, at the same time it’s charm is surrounded by an ominous background that will necessitate her protection for the foreseeable future. Another copy of this print is in the permanent collection of the Whitney Museum. Image is ~8x10” Some age toning, otherwise good condition In new mat and frame Titled in pencil lower left and signed lower right. Created in the 1930’s by the Associated American Artists (AAA)in a limited edition of 250. This etching retains the original AAA label and bio on the back.They note that Costigan had won more prestigious awards for his graphic art than any artist in America, in addition to being represented at the Met in NYC,Art Institute of Chicago and the Phillips Gallery in D.C.
