Chagall's "Daphnis and Chloe" series ranks among the great masterpieces of color lithography created by any artist.  The series was originally proposed to Chagall by the publisher, Teriade in 1939, but Chagall elected not to begin to work on the suite until 1958.  Three years of labor were required by both the artist, working with master printer Charles Sorlier and the renown Mourlot lithographic studio to complete the series of 42 lithographs which illustrate the ancient love story of the two title characters.  Chagall was 64 when this artwork was released in 1961.
Chagall was at first reluctant to undertake the commission because of his admiration for Bonnard who already created his own illustration of Longus novel, which scholars of Ancient Greece estimate was written in the second century A.D.  Chagall made two separate trips to Greece to prepare himself for the series.  His intent was to absorb the light, atmosphere and mood of the ancient land and he created numerous watercolor sketches in preparation for the lithographs.  The publisher initially limited the number of colors to five or six, but with the creation of each successive trial proof, more colors were added until twenty or more were finally employed to complete each image.  The results astonished collectors and art historians alike, as the lithographs achieved a quality not previously seen in the medium of color lithography.  The lithographs are luminous, translucent and painterly.  Describing his process to create the works, Chagall said in  his inimitable metaphoric language, "... the color must be integrated with the drawing the way diction is with singing ... it's like the sun coming into the garden ... "
Considered one of the quintessential artists of the 20th century, Chagall defined a new generation of figurative artists by envisioning optimism, empathy and resolve within his work.  Those qualities permeate his passionate depictions of the two Greek lovers, which perfectly capture the fiery longing of a new romance.  Amazingly, the project originated as the artist was preparing for his own second honeymoon.  Chagall had recently met and married his second wife, Valentina Brodsky and was touched by the romantic tale of love conquering all.
The story of Daphnis and Chloe recounts the journey of two soulmates who begin life as orphans on the Greek Isle of Lesbos.  Raised by local farmers and shepherds, the two orphans grow up together.  As they mature, Daphnis and Chloe fall in love, but struggle to understand their new romantic feelings.  Throughout the twisting path to their eventual marriage, Chloe is besieged by other suitors, many of whom attempt to abduct her.  She is eventually kidnapped and taken to a nearby city where she is saved by the god Pan.  Daphnis is also abducted, finding himself captured by pirates and facing numerous trials on his way back to his true love.  In the end, the couple is reunited and both discover their true parentage.  The story ends happily with the soulmates married and living together in the Greek countryside.  This particular artwork encompasses the return of Daphnis' father Dionysophanes.
Lithographer and editor of Chagall's catalog raisonee of lithographs, Fernand Mourlot, said of the suite, "Because of the quality, format and number of lithographs it contains, the book constitutes a work of notable importance which, unquestionably, can be placed at the top of the list of illustrated books of our time." More About the Lithograph Process
Lithography is a method of repeatable printing that dates back to as far back as 1796.  An image is designed on a limestone block.  It is created with the use of grease and water.  An artist would draw a design on flat limestone blocks with greasy pencils.  Then a chemical is applied to the surface, which attracts the moisture and repels the ink.  Where the artist has drawn on the design, the design will retain the the ink without smearing. The artist then carefully presses the paper to be printed over the stone.  It is repeated for each stone.
The process of lithograph requires a complex layering of colors to produce a finished image.  This artwork listed for sale required 40 separate limestone slabs.  Adding 20 colors, in the proper order required a great deal of time and precisioned registry.
