*charming 19th Century pencil drawing Environs de Saroche (Vendée) un Échalier - [area near Saroche (Vendée) a Stile] - original 19th Century pencil drawingFrench, circa 1890The actual artwork of this charming drawing measures 3 1/2" x 5 3/4" and was carefully mounted (reverse taped) onto a beige mat that has been hinged onto a piece of stiff foamcore measuring 8 1/4" x 10 1/2."The work is unsigned, but on the reverse of the foamcore the previous owner wrote "artist R. K. ?, c1890 - French."Also on the reverse of the foamcore, the previous owner taped an original handwritten inscription (in French) that apparently was part of an album page or sketchbook page. The drawing is in fine condition, as illustrated. This is absolutely guaranteed to be an original, antique drawing, and is NOT any type of modern copy or reproduction.NOTE: A stile (Échalier) is an arrangement of steps that allows people but not animals to climb over a fence or wall. The Vendée is a department in the Pays-de-la-Loire region in west-central France, on the Atlantic. I am not sure I have transcribed the name Saroche correctly. Perhaps it is Garoche or Gavroche? Also, another possibility: the capital of the area is La Roche-sur-Yon. This work has been in my collection for about thirty years, probably originally purchased from a dealer at Brimfield. My family has been in the antiques and design business since 1955! International Buyers Please Note: Import duties, taxes and charges are not
