(Unframed) Original Drawing (not a print) depicting 78th Fighter Group pilot Ben Mayo in his P-47 Thunderbolt, by Wade Meyers (seller).
‘No Guts ~ No Glory!’ 6.5 x 8.5 in., carbon, graphite, and colored pencil on heavy archival warm-toned paper.
1941 West Point graduate Ben I. Mayo, Jr. scored 4 confirmed aerial victories (2 Bf 109s + 2 Fw 190s destroyed, and 1 Fw 190 credited as damaged, plus 2.5 credited as destroyed on the ground) while flying P-47 Thunderbolts with the Duxford-based 78th Fighter Group.
Mayo rose to command both the 82nd and 84th Fighter squadrons while at Duxford. His combat awards include the Distinguished Flying Cross in both WWII and Korea, four Bronze Stars (two each in WWII and Korea), and numerous Air Medals. He retired from the Air Force in 1963 as a Colonel. Col. Mayo passed away in his home state of Arkansas in 1983.
The drawing has been lightly sprayed by the artist with archival fixative.
Given dimensions reflect the borders of the drawing itself, and do not include the 1/2 inch ‘self-matting’ paper border all around the drawing as seen in the first photo. Extra paper (see second image) is also there to facilitate matting and framing.
