Original Pencil Drawing by Andre Leroux (1911-1997) - French Artist Pencil on velum. Signed. The date of this drawing is unknown, likely sometime between 1930 and 1970. The following is taken from Wikipedia France André Leroux was born in 1911 in Paris. He is the son of the painter Auguste Leroux (1871-1954) and his paternal uncle Georges Paul Leroux is also a known painter. He spent his youth in Paris in a district then inhabited by many artists. The top floor of the house, covered with a large glass roof, became his workshop. He lived there until the end of his father's life in 1954. André Leroux was first and foremost his father's pupil. In 1929, he was awarded first place in the entrance examination of the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris, where he became a pupil of Jean-Pierre Laurens, Paul Albert Laurens (1870-1934) and Louis Roger (1874-1953). In 1931, L'Éternel Épopée earned him the congratulations of President Albert Lebrun. He won the Leguay-Lebrun Prize from the Institut de France and the Grand Gold Medal. Painter of figure and history and still life ( Bouquet of peonies , 1968 , portraitist ( Antonio Madrid, 1946); Portrait of Manuela del Rio , 1947, classicism and romanticism ( Serenity , 1930 , Hamlet and Horacio , 1939 , place him well apart in his time. Among his major works: David winner of Goliath , 1932; Christ at the Sepulchre, 1933; Ophélie , 1934; Vers la lumière , 1936; and Fantôme de Gloire , 1938. He made pencil and charcoal drawings, including Nude elongé . He exhibited almost every year at the Salon des artistes Francais, he was appointed professor at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. He died in 1997. His studio was dispersed in 2000 by the Berlinghi and Lucien firm in Nogent-sur-Marne and in 2001 by the Chochon firm in Paris. This piece may have come from the dispersement of his studio.
