The year was 1980. . . Ronald Reagan had just been elected President, the Iran Hostage Crisis was winding down while Cherbobyl and Mt St. Helens were heating up. In the theaters , a small movie was released that told of the alleged meeting in the desert between Melvin Dummar and Howard Hughes. The movie sparked renewed interest in the billionaire recluse who died four years earlier in 1976. No doubt hoping to fulfill the publics hunger for info on Hughes, many magazines and newspapers ran feature length stories on the man. This, in the days prior to computers being widely used, newspapers and magazines relied on original hard copy artwork to be photographed and accompany their stories. Art like this one : This is an original pencil sketch by illustrator Pete Bentovoja of aviation pioneer Howard Hughes. Bentojova worked as an illustrator for both LA Times and LA Herald Examiner and would produce illustrations such as this for use in the newspapers. This illustration is a montage of major highlights in Hughes' life. . .his ownership of TWA, his movie producer/director period, his advances in oil drilling machinery, his love affairs, his casino ownership. This is a one of a kind original piece of art and history. No other copies exist. This sketch is done on a heavy paper canvas, framed and matted . It is 24"x18" and signed and dated 'Pete Bentovoja 1980.' As mentioned before it was used or may have been used in an actual newspaper story (Note the areas of White-Out especially in top left corner added either by the artist or editor to make the area stand out better after being photographed before going to press. The artwork is available for local pick up in Corona, Ca. Otherwise it ships for a flat $30 in continental U.S. (international rates higher).
