Original Architectural Plans and Drawings for the Dr. & Mrs. J. Whisenand Residence, La Jolla, California.by architect Russell Forester
Russell Forester FAIA, 1920-2002. La Jolla, California. [San Diego City], ~1958. Original architectural draftings and drawings for the still-extant, circa 1958 home for Dr. James M. and Mrs. Juanita Whisenand, built at 6325 El Camino del Teatro, Muirlands, La Jolla, California. Mid-century 4 bedroom, 2 bath residence with study and playroom and detached garage on sloped lot. Forester (1920-2002), best known for his proto-Pop designs for the original Jack in the Box restaurants in 1951, went on to become a respected commercial and residential architect, which in the late 1970s he stopped doing in favor of his studio art. He was honored by the American Institute of Architects with FAIA status for his work in all media. Full sets of historic architectural drawings are not often offered.
The set includes 5 sheets of ORIGINAL (not prints) Forester drafting (he used no assistants) and 7 brown line prints all with (often quite extensive) pencil or some light ink, color pencil or wash additions and revisions in Forester's hand. Includes: Floor Plan, Window Schedule, Finish Schedule, Foundation Plan, Roof and Plot Plan, Sections, Elevations (4 sides), Kitchen Cabinets, Bath Cabinets, Gate detail, Fireplace Detail, Heating and Electrical Plans, etc. All 24 x 34 1/2 inch sheets, bond paper or brown line paper folded in eighths, as always, in (torn) original manila envelope. The drawings are not dated, but the first appearance of the occupied house in the City Directory is 1959, so 1958 seems a reasonable guess as to the drawing's dates.
Forester's work, both architectural and studio art was featured in a retrospective at the Oceanside Museum of Art, and his reputation continues to grow. These 64 year old drawings may be seen, by arrangement, in the San Diego area.
