A fine pencil drawing of a horse entitled Arabian by Xanthus Smith, after a painting by British artist Benjamin Marshall, executed in April of 1859. Dimensions: 6" x 8" (sheet size). Signed "X.S. del. after Benj. Marshall" on lower left. Xanthus Smith (1839-1929) was born and raised in suburban Philadelphia. All of his immediate family relations were accomplished painters. Instruction from his mother, noted floral painter Mary Priscilla Wilson Smith, and father, the celebrated landscape artist Russell Smith, supplanted institutional instruction in his youthful artistic development. Critics of the day often compared his technique to his father's, though their subject matter often differed considerably (Xanthus' fame rests on his seascapes and Civil War naval battle scenes). This strong parental influence also shaped the career of his sister Mary, who became an acclaimed painter of small barnyard animals in her adult life. All of the Smiths exhibited their work at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. This drawing is from a small archive of Smith family drawings, watercolors, and oil sketches in our inventory. The collection was acquired from a Smith descendant in Maine and includes works by Russell Smith, his wife, Mary Priscilla Wilson Smith, and their children Xathus and Mary. CONDITION: Very good.
