"Francisco Zúñiga was born in Costa Rica in 1912 and settled in Mexico in 1936. He belongs to those races in Central America who's roots and traditions were systematically destroyed that they might be rediscovered more powerfully and immutably in their memories and in their blood. This explains the massive primitive forms behind any clothes that could give them a place or time. They are recognizable in themselves. They come toward us, women from bygone ages, with their eternal gestures, step after endless step. Mother's, wives, companions, of men who disappeared, men who succumbed. They affirm the continuation of life.
His sculptures, therefore, resume a historical process which first found expression in the creations of Mexican mural artists. They borrow nothing from historical or factual events, but are actually the expression of basic human gestures. Under their veils, their shawls which cover but do not hide their unalterable forms, they live freely as they do, these primitive women who remained so through the ages... There is a defiant look in these beings who have recovered their native dignity and assert the essential moments of what they are through their actions. Positive forces affirm themselves in the face of an evolution which is convinced that it has bypassed them or brought them into submission. One should probably go back to Gauguin to find a comparable expression of the miraculous survival of a sublime race whose nostalgia we all carry within ourselves. Francisco Zúñiga let's us feel all the weight of this race as well as it's concrete and human magic."
